چکیده

We set up a forward – backward path integral for a point particle in a bath of photons to derive a master equation for the density matrix which describes electromagnetic dissipation and decoherence. We also derive the associated Langevin equation. As an application, we recalculate the Wigner-Weisskopf formula for the natural line width of an atomic state at zero temperature and find, in addition, the temperature broadening caused by the decoherence term. Our master equation also yields the correct Lamb shift of atomic levels. The two equations may have applications to dilute interstellar gases or to few-particle systems in cavities. Classical and quantum dissipation in non homogeneous environments

We generalize the oscillator model of a particle interacting with a thermal reservoir by introducing arbitrary nonlinear couplings in the particle coordinates. The equilibrium positions of the heat bath oscillators are promoted to space-time functions, which are shown to represent a modulation of the internal noise by the external forces. The model thus provides a description of classical and q...

Embedding dissipation and decoherence in unitary evolution schemes.

Dissipation and decoherence, and the evolution from pure to mixed states in quantum physics, are handled through master equations for the density matrix. By embedding elements of this matrix in a higher-dimensional Liouville-Bloch equation, the methods of unitary integration are adapted to solve for the density matrix as a function of time, including the nonunitary effects of dissipation and de...

Decoherence and Dissipation for a Quantum System Coupled to a Local Environment

Decoherence and dissipation in quantum systems has been studied extensively in the context of Quantum Brownian Motion. Effective decoherence in coarse grained quantum systems has been a central issue in recent efforts by Zurek and by Hartle and Gell-Mann to address the Quantum Measurement Problem. Although these models can yield very general classical phenomenology, they are incapable of reprod...

Decoherence in a driven three-level system

Dissipation and decoherence, and the evolution from pure to mixed states in quantum physics are handled through master equations for the density matrix. Master equations such as the Lindblad equation preserve the trace of this matrix. Viewing them as first-order time-dependent operator equations for the elements of the density matrix, a unitary integration procedure can be adapted to solve for ...

Inversion of quantum jumps in quantum optical systems under continuous observation.

Many current investigations of fundamental quantum phenomena would benefit greatly from the implementation of methods to stabilize quantum states against noise and dissipation [1]. For example, the realizability of quantum computers [2] seems to depend critically on development of robust techniques for preserving the coherence of quantum memory elements. In this Letter we shall describe a schem...
